Double ร in Thai: Why กรรม Is kam and บรร Is ban
TL;DR: When Thai writes ร twice, as in ธรรม or บรรจุ, it is not two r sounds. The pair is a vowel. If the letter after it closes the syllable, รร reads as a short a before that letter, so ธรรม is tham. If nothing is pronounced after it, or the next letter starts a new syllable, รร reads an, so บรรจุ is ban-jù. Thai teachers call the pair ร หัน, ror hǎn.

How often a doubled ร actually turns up
Often enough to matter. We counted it in the Thai National Corpus word list, 106,122 distinct words with their frequencies. 696 of them contain รร. That sounds rare until you weight by use: roughly one word in every 125 of running Thai text has a doubled ร in it, and 15 of the 1,000 most frequent words do.
Those 15 are not obscure. คณะกรรมการ, a committee, is the 302nd most common word in the corpus. วัฒนธรรม, culture, is 323rd. ธรรมชาติ, nature, ธรรมดา, ordinary, and พรรค, a political party, are all inside the top 800. Anyone reading a Thai newspaper, a noticeboard or a product label meets the pattern within a page.
And two families carry most of it. Words built on กรรม (karma, and the suffix that makes activities and industries) account for about a third of every รร in running text, and words built on ธรรม (dharma, and everything from fairness to fees) for another quarter or so. Learn how those two read and you have handled about three in five of the doubled ร you will ever see.
The rule: look at the letter after the pair
รร never makes an r sound of its own. It stands where a vowel would stand, after the first consonant of the syllable, and what it sounds like depends on one thing: whether the next letter ends this syllable or belongs to the next one.
- The next letter closes the syllable. It has no vowel of its own and nothing silences it. รร is then a short a, and that letter is the final sound. ธรรม is ธ + a + ม, tham. พรรค is phák, with ค giving the k.
- Nothing is pronounced after the pair. Either the word ends at รร, or the next letter carries the silencing mark ์. รร is then an. สรร, to select, is sǎn. สวรรค์, heaven, is sà-wǎn, because the ค is switched off.
- The next letter starts a new syllable. It carries a vowel of its own. รร is again an, and the next syllable begins cleanly. บรรจุ is ban-jù, since จ has ุ under it. พรรษา, the Buddhist rains retreat, is phan-sǎa.
The tone follows the ordinary rules once you know which of those you have. The first consonant sets the class; the syllable is live when it ends in n or m and dead when it ends in k, t or p. That is why สรร (high class, live) is rising and พรรค (low class, dead and short) is high. Nothing about the doubled ร changes the tone calculation, which is the one piece of good news here. If the eight final sounds are not solid yet, the first case will feel harder than it is, because the final is where all the work happens.

| Word | After the รร | Read | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ธรรม | ม closes it | tham | dharma, what is right |
| กรรม | ม closes it | kam | karma, an action |
| พรรค | ค closes it | phák | a political party |
| สรร | nothing | sǎn | to select |
| ครรภ์ | ภ silenced by ์ | khan | womb, as in ตั้งครรภ์, pregnant |
| บรรจุ | จ has its own vowel | ban-jù | to pack; the contents line on a package |
| กรรไกร | ไกร is its own syllable | kan-krai | scissors |
The letter that gets read twice
Here is the part the rule does not warn you about. In a long word, the letter that closes the รร syllable is often pronounced a second time as the start of the next one, with a short a supplied. ธรรม on its own is tham, but ธรรมดา, ordinary, is tham-má-daa, not tham-daa. The ม ends one syllable and starts another.
This is not a quirk of รร. It is the same habit Thai applies to many words borrowed from Pali and Sanskrit, where a consonant does double duty and a vowel appears that is not written, the pattern the implied vowel covers in general. รร words are mostly borrowings of exactly that kind, so they show it more than most. Some you will meet early:
| Word | Read | Meaning | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| ธรรมดา | tham-má-daa | ordinary, regular | The regular portion on a noodle stall, beside พิเศษ, large |
| ค่าธรรมเนียม | khâa-tham-niam | a fee | Bank charges, visa fees, entrance fees |
| ห้างสรรพสินค้า | hâang sàp-phá-sǐn-kháa | department store | Shopping centre names and directions |
| สรรพคุณ | sàp-phá-khun | what a medicine is for | The indications line on a medicine box |
| กรรมการ | kam-má-kaan | a committee, a referee | Notices, sport, anything official |
Whether the closing letter is read twice cannot be worked out from the spelling. ธรรมดา repeats the ม and ธรรมชาติ, nature, does too (tham-má-châat), but you learn each of these as a word. The honest advice is to apply the three-case rule, say what it gives you, and let the extra syllable arrive when you hear the word. สรรพคุณ, the second-last row, is also one of the headings printed on a Thai medicine box, the line that says what the drug is for, and it is covered with the rest of that box in reading a Thai medicine label starts.

One word breaks the pattern, and you will need it
ภรรยา, wife, is phan-rá-yaa. The รร reads an, as case three predicts, and then a ร is heard again at the start of the next syllable, which none of the cases predict. It is the 1,015th most frequent word in the corpus, formal rather than everyday (people say เมีย or แฟน in conversation), and it appears on every form that asks about a spouse. Learn it as a word.
Why it looks like a consonant cluster and is not one
The trap is that Thai already has clusters with ร in second place: กร, คร, ตร, ปร, พร. So กรรม looks like a กร cluster followed by another ร, and a reader who knows the Thai consonant clusters tries kram-something. It is kam. The first ร is not a cluster at all; it belongs to the pair, and the pair is the vowel.
The quickest check is that a real cluster is followed by a vowel mark or by a single final. If you see two ร side by side with no vowel symbol between them, stop reading them as letters and read them as a vowel. That one habit fixes กรรม, พรรค, ตรรกะ (logic, tàk-kà) and every other case where the first consonant happens to be one that clusters.
What to do with this
Learn ธรรม and กรรม as the two anchors, because they cover most of the doubled ร you will meet. For anything else, look one letter ahead: closed means a plus that letter, open means an. Expect long borrowed words to sound the closing letter twice, and accept that you learn those as vocabulary. That is a smaller job than it looks. The corpus holds 696 รร words, and a list of about fifteen gets you through most of what is written in a newspaper.
Phayan is an app for learning to read Thai script letter by letter, starting from zero, with audio on every word and progress kept in your browser without an account. Its free levels cover the final consonants and then the mid class with the tone marks, the two things this rule leans on, so by the time a doubled ร turns up it is a small step rather than a surprise.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to learn to read รร in Thai words?
Learn ธรรม and กรรม first, then apply one test: does the letter after รร close the syllable or start a new one. Phayan teaches the final consonants as a level of their own, letter by letter with audio on every word, and that is what the test stands on. An Anki deck is a good place for the handful of words that read the closing letter twice, such as ธรรมดา, because those have to be learned as words.
How do I pronounce ธรรม?
Tham, at a mid tone: ธ, then the doubled ร as a short a, then ม as the final. Phayan has audio on every word it teaches, which helps with the sound, though a synthesised voice is not a tone model to copy. Google Translate will read ธรรม aloud too, but it will not explain why there is no r in it.
Is it safe to read รร as an every time?
No, only when nothing closes the syllable. Before a closing letter the pair is a short a, so กรรม is kam and not kan-mo. Phayan teaches the final consonants as their own level, and reading the final first is what decides between the two. A chart that lists รร as a single vowel with one sound is where the mistake usually comes from, so treat any one-line entry as half the rule.
What is the difference between รร and a ร cluster such as กร?
A cluster like กร is two consonants said together, as in กรุง, krung. A doubled ร is a vowel, so กรรม has no r sound at all and reads kam. Phayan is an app for reading Thai script, so it works from the spelling, with audio on every word to hear the result. A listening-led course such as ThaiPod101 is the better place to practise saying clusters aloud.
Why does the word for culture end in tham when it is spelled with two r's?
Because the two ร together are a vowel, not two consonants, and the ม after them closes the syllable. วัฒนธรรม is wát-thá-ná-tham, and the last syllable follows the first case of the rule exactly. Phayan is built around reading what the spelling says, and this is a case where the spelling is regular once you know the pair is a vowel. It is also one of the 15 รร words among the thousand most common in the Thai National Corpus.
